For many people their home is their castle. So it is no wonder we like to stay in our homes as long as possible. But like everything else there comes a time when we need to move to a smaller home. But how do you know when is the right time?

I would like you to ask yourself the following 5 questions.

1. Does your home fit your physical needs?
2. Do you have trouble keeping up with the maintenance of your home?
3. Do you feel safe in your home?
4. Do you have access to proper medical care in your current home?
5. Is your home isolating you from friends and fun events?

If you answered yes to most of these questions, it may be time to downsize. Moving to a smaller home can be emotional, but staying in your home too long can be dangerous and a financial strain. While this article does apply to the elderly, it also applies to anyone in a situation where financing a large home has put undo stress on the budget!

Make sure to get lots of help when you do decide downsizing is right for you. Call a real estate agent to look at the house and help you get it ready for sale. Making decisions before you are forced to, will lower the stress and put you in a better situation.

Your home should bring you joy and peace, not stress and isolation. Our homes should be our castle!  Just be sure your castle fits your needs. If you make the move sooner rather than later, you might find you enjoy your new home even more!
